Program Profile: Restaurant and Food Services Management | Home | |||
| Informal perspective about a program of study. |
How I Got Started: My father is an amazing cook and owns his own restaurant. As long as I can remember he has let me go to work with him. When I was really young he would show me how to prepare meals, and even let me work in the kitchen. Before too long I was planning meals for the restaurant patrons and creating some of the dishes for the menu at my father’s restaurant all by myself. Now, the most satisfying thing for me to hear is someone telling me that one of my recipes was the best meal they’ve ever had!
What I Want to Study: When I was deciding on where to go to college I came across a Restaurant and Food Services degree at a local university. Because I’ve been working in my father’s restaurant for so long, the idea of planning meals for a restaurant as a career didn’t even sound like work to me! A degree in Restaurant and Food Services Management prepares students to plan and manage food services in hotels and other hospitality businesses and restaurants. My coursework includes finance and business management, as well as cooking and nutrition.
What I Can Do In The Future: Once I have my degree I intend to go to work in a restaurant managing the staff and organizing menus. I would promote the restaurant with advertisements and flyers, and cultivate the menu to the wants and needs of the restaurant’s clientele. If I want to, I may even try to work in a hotel or on a cruise ship. Another popular option for restaurant and food services management students is to open their own catering business. While all these options seem exciting, eventually I hope to take over my father’s restaurant and make the family business my own!
