Informal perspective about a program of study.

How I Got Started: I’ve always noticed that people treat men and women differently. Sometimes that can be good, like when a man holds a door open for a woman. Sometimes it can be bad, such as when women get paid less for doing the same job as a man. I wanted to study gender issues and learn why people act so differently towards men and women. A major in women’s studies provides an in-depth look at these differences and the theoretical reasons for them.

What I Want to Study: Women’s issues affect me personally, so I want to understand them better. I can take classes that cover a wide range of these issues. I should start with the basics, such as Feminist Theory and the History of Women, which shows the treatment of women during different time periods. I’m also interested in specific classes. Some classes focus on individual women who have made a big difference in the world, such as Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath. The class on Women, Violence, and Law deals with issues that occur in today’s world.

What I Can Do In The Future: Women’s studies will provide me with an understanding of how gender affects the world around me. I may choose a career that helps me make others aware of women’s issues, working as a teacher or publishing a book. However, I could use my strong perspective on gender in culture to help those who may not be aware of how gender affects us and may be unfairly treated because of it. To do this, I may work in management, journalism, or law.
