Career Activity: Exploring Careers and Tools
Objective: Helping students understand that each career involves specific tools

Teacher Preparation

  1. Using the Teacher Guide, choose the number of careers and tools equal to the number of students playing the game (20 students=20 careers).
  2. Print an identical Student Worksheet for each student that has only the career names in the left column.
  3. Write the name of one tool on one piece of paper and fold paper in half like a greeting card with the tool name inside. Write the tool number on the front. Create as many of these Tool Sheets as careers and students.

Materials

  1. Teacher Guide
  2. Student Worksheet

Activity

  1. Ask students to sit in a circle.
  2. Explain that the purpose of this activity is to explore the different tools used by different careers. Ask the students to think about people at work, what they do, and what tools help do the job.
  3. Introduce the game. Each student will be given a Student Worksheet and a pencil. In addition, each will be given a numbered Tool Sheet that will be passed around. When the teacher says “pass” the students will pass the Tool Sheet, open the Tool Sheet they have received and match the tool to a career on the Student Worksheet by writing the number on the front of the Tool Sheet. Students then refold and wait for instructions to “pass” again. The Tool Sheets will continue to be passed until every student has seen every Tool Sheet.
  4. Give each student a Student Worksheet and a pencil.
  5. Ask the students to write their name on the Student Worksheet.
  6. Give each student a folded Tool Sheet and instruct them not to peek.
  7. When everyone has materials, begin and complete the activity.

Evaluation

  1. Collect all Tool Sheets.
  2. Go through the Tool Sheets one at a time, read out loud the tool (and number) and ask the students which career uses the tool. Ask the students if they would like a career using the tool.
