Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Divide the class into two groups; tell each group that they will identify tools for jobs.

Step:  2 Duration: 15 min.
Hold up one object at a time and have groups take turns naming occupations that use that object. Award one point to each team for a correct answer. When neither team can think of any other jobs for that object, select another object and repeat the procedure.

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
After the winning team is declared, students will discuss the meaning of work in the occupations they have identified.

Variety of tools used by workers (e.g., hammer, saw, ball, calculators, pen and pencil, toy earthmovers, tractors)

Assessment
Students participation in the activity will be evaluated.
Extension
Have students bring an object from home that their parent uses at work. Allow students to explain how their parent uses that object on their job.
Remediation
Allow students to draw a picture of a person performing a certain occupation. Ask them to draw the tools that person might need to do their job.
