Topic: Awareness of different occupations and changing male/female roles.
Standard: Describe how work is important to all people. Describe the changing life roles of men and women in work and family. Describe how contributions of individuals, both inside and outside the home, are important.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Have students brainstorm as many careers as possible and write them on the board.

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
Ask students if these careers were available 50 years ago. Ask if they were performed by men or women.

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
Have students choose one of the cutouts or paper dolls and tape that “person” beside one of the occupations on the board. Discuss their choices of people to do the job.

Step:  4 Duration: 10 min.
Have students choose an occupation that they are interested in and draw a person working in that occupation.




Materials and Equipment
Clippings of people from magazines, showing a variety of genders and ethnic groups, paper dolls in a variety of ethnic groups and genders

Have students research a famous person from history and write a short paragraph detailing his/her career.
