Procedures/Activities

Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Ask students to think of a new task they would like to try in the home. Tell students to think about things the opposite sex parent does that they think they might enjoy doing. Ask them to choose one of those things to try.

Step:  2 Duration: one week
Send home a duplicated letter, asking parents’ cooperation. After a week of the experience, conduct a discussion using the following questions. How did you enjoy it? Were your parents willing to have you do this? Did anyone tell you that you shouldn’t be doing that because you are either a boy or a girl?

Title: FileName: Letter.doc
Description: Print and copy to send home with each child.

Step:  3 Duration: 5 min.
Have students think about occupations that can be done by either men or women. Have them think of occupations that are done mostly by men and occupations that are done mostly by women.

Step:  4 Duration: 10 min.
Introduce the word “stereotype.” Define the word as the belief that a certain group of people possess common characteristics. Discuss how expecting one gender to do only certain kinds of work can be stereotyping. Encourage students to explore new tasks on the basis of what they think they might enjoy or be good at doing, rather than on the basis of their gender.
