Students will describe careers that require a person to be outside or inside most of the time.

Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Explain to the class that many careers can be divided into two groups—those that take place primarily inside and those that take place primarily outside. Write “Inside” and “Outside” on the chalkboard or overhead projector.

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Have students name jobs that people do and place them in the appropriate category. Broaden student awareness by mentioning other careers: beekeeper (O), truck driver (O), forest ranger (O), fashion designer (I), accountant (I).

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
Ask students which they prefer, being inside or outside. Have students list the advantages and disadvantages of inside and outside careers.

Ask students to choose one of their favorite careers and conduct further research and prepare a short report to share with the class.

Ask students to create a collage of inside and outside careers using magazine pictures.
