Students will observe and identify the training and skills necessary for science careers.

Primary Learning Outcomes
What training and skills are necessary for a science career?

Additional Learning Outcomes

Assessed QCC Standards:

Grade: 8
Guidance
B. Educational and Occupational Exploration
4
Topic: Knowledge of the benefits of educational achievement to career opportunities.
Standard: Describe the importance of academic and occupational skills in the work world. Identify how the skills taught in school subjects are used in various occupations. Describe individual strengths and weaknesses in school subjects. Describe a plan of action for increasing basic educational skills. Describe the skills needed to adjust to changing occupational requirements. Describe how continued learning enhances the ability to achieve goals. Describe how skills relate to the selection of high school courses of study. Describe how aptitudes and abilities relate to broad occupational groups.

5
Topic: Understanding the relationship between work and learning.
Standard: Demonstrate effective learning habits and skills. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of personal skills and attitudes to job success. Describe the relationship of personal attitudes, beliefs, abilities, and skills to occupations.

Identify skills that are transferable from one occupation to another. Identify sources of employment in the community.

Procedures/Activities

Step:  1 Duration: one class period
Arrange a field trip to a local technical institute. Prepare students to observe science career tasks performed in the school setting. Instruct students to listen attentively to the instructors and tour guide for information on course requirements and skills to perform the tasks. Have students take notes on what they see and hear.

Step:  2 Duration: several days of research
Afterwards, in class, have students discuss science activities they observed. Have students research and identify five careers in science and create a report on the high school and post-high school courses that provide the necessary skills to perform successfully in each career. Have students choose one career choice and give an oral report to the class.

Materials and Equipment
